Between Thessaloniki and the Holy Mountain of Athos, the "other" Chalcidice remained until the 1970s as isolated and economically depressed region. Recent development of communications, tourism and holiday resorts has given it new life, to which archaelogical research has added the impressive presence of ancient-chiefly Classical-civilisation..However, enchanting landscapes, important monuments and human activities which have continued the same for centuries have remained unkknown to seasonal visitors.Motor vehicles take their passengers to the beaches, to the bliss of idleness, which the hinterland, the memory, the works and days of men are ignored both by those who ought to be drawining attention to them and those who ought to know of them.It was this great gap which, some yers ago (1990) the Holy Coenobium of the Annunciation at Ormylia, Chalcidice,a metochi of the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra on Mount Athos, undertook to fill by realising the idea of bringing this book into beeing. Failure to share this approach on the part of those who should have done so led to the long delay in making it available to the public.
